Mike Patton does the movie industry. A Perfect Place is a short, 25 minute long, tragic comedy, starring Mark Boone Junior (Batman Begins) and Bill Moseley (The Devil’s Rejects), photographed in Black and white by Hiro Narita and directed by Derrick Scocchera. The movie score is by our man from Peeping Tom, Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Tomahawk fame.
The score marks a milestone for Patton who has been regaled in music circles for years but now delves into the world of film.

Another release from Nortt, the Danish one man band who likes flirting with death through music. Extremelly dark and depressing funeral doom.

Quite a different offering from Omar and the boys, and because I appreciate a good drummer when I hear one, take notice of the new drummer Thomas Prigden in this, truly amazing work. Some solid, super-polished production and focused, hard-hitting stuff.

Bauhaus is one of my favourite bands ever, ‘Mask’ era, at the turn of the 70”s, a legendary artistic and unique band now gone for 25 years, regardless of their recent reunion. Not much here, a collection of modern rock songs with some scarse signature elements of which the highlight has to be Peter Murphy’s voice.
In all truth I was hoping for old-style bauhaus, back from the dead straight to an energetic 2008 in need of some gloomy poetry laced by tapestries of feedback and groovy yet dark melodies. I highlight the one track that fits the bill. just.

And below, an absolute highlight of bauhaus’s incredible repertoire, from 1981′s Mask, “The passion of lovers”. A true hymn to the fathers of goth rock.

Its been 10 years since the mighty GY!BE dropped ”F#A# (infinite)”. One of the highlights of my cd collection, a masterfull triumph in post-rock music.

In it one of the band’s best songs ever ”East Hastings”… at eighteen minutes long and integrating 4 distinct movements, the track is a roller coaster of emotion and contrasts, like a sonic voyage through the real “East Hastings” (the name of a street in the impoverished and crime-addled Donwtime Eastside of Vancouver in Canada). This track would make a scene in Danny Doyle’s ’28days later’ movie.

Formed in 1994, the band has been quiet since 2003 and only a few days ago the NME annouced the band was to put an end to their career. This is not true. If you dont know this band, wake up tomorrow morning real early and go and get all their albums.

At last, the latest album by critically acclaimed UK glitch-rock experimentalists 65daysofstatic. The Sheffield based band delivers another strong dose of a sonic mantra where rock, electronica and improvisation are treated in equal measure. Another album making our list of Best of 2007.

Sleepytime Gorilla Museum’s latest offering makes our Best of 2007 list. This album is everything UnexpecT would like to be able to do but just cant because the main difference between them two is that UnexpecT are boring and uterly repetitive in formulas while SGM’s distribution of ideas and intricate yet complex avant garde elements pratically define what a alt-metal band should sound like. “In glorious times” reminds me of Devill Doll, of David Bowie, of Laibach, of so many good things… its dense, intense, quirky and demands attention.

The band’s ever-changing sonic attack is back with Ire Works, more experimental, less math-rock but still a mile away from being a ‘radiohead of metalcore’ as written in allmusic.com. Another solid slab of excrutiating paced precision and technical bliss from the New Jersey band. One of our Best of 2007 albums.

Minus ‘Jesus Christ Bobby’ 2000

Jesus Christ Bobby was the band’s second full lenght, released on small label Smekkleysa in 2000. Later signed to Victory records, the album would resurface but to little exposure. Maybe it was their agressive sound (a sort of angry hardcore/nu-metal combi), maybe it was their poor live performances at the time (remember seeing them live at the underworld in camden and they were really bad), maybe it was, in the end, just bad distribution, fact is this album is little known but it deserves a serious mention alongside other greats in the (similar) genre.

First entry to our best albums of 2008. The is the fifth album from this Washington DC psych-rock trio. In ‘Old Growth’ the songs behind their slow, tentacular riffing and groovy jams scream to be played live. Catch them soon in the UK.

A cinematic and expressive take on black metal that relies heavily on dark, haunting ambience and soundscapes and less on the buzzing, explosive blast beats one would expect for a BM tagged band.

Each piece flows into the one after it and they traverse many different musical feels over the course of the album; but in the end they all tie in together.
